IND-1

an industrial machine for the FM-1, in the browser: the same code the FM-1 runs

Turn your phone sideways for bigger controls.

Off. Sound starts when you switch it on.

Pages and knobs

One page a layer, each on its own button; a layer's level is KNOB 1. SELECT steps through the pages. Each piece remembers its own settings, and its song. A page's button pressed again opens its editor (below).

Machine HOME

Tempo
60 to 180 (also HOME + SELECT, from any page).
Arrange
Loop (a section holds until you move on), Long, Normal or Short sections.
Evolve
How much the riffs, lines and drums change as it goes, and whether each new song has new material.
Intensity
How many layers play each section.

Drums SEQ

Level, Groove
How loud; EBM, Rock, Break, Half time, Thrash or Stomp.
Crush, Kick
Fewer bits and a lower sample rate (the EMAX's crunch); the kick's drive.

Bass LFO

Level, Cutoff
How loud; the low-pass filter.
Squelch, Drive
The filter's envelope and resonance; the distortion.

Guitar ENV

Level, Gain
How loud; how hard the amp is driven.
Chug, Riff
The palm mute, open to tight; how busy the riffs are.

Synth ARP

Level, Tone
How loud; saw, gritty FM, or a metallic clang.
Decay, Busy
Short stabs to long chords; how many, and lines in the chorus.

Metal SEL

Metal, Hits
The clangs' level; how many.
Noise, Texture
The bed's level; a drone, or static.

Space FX

Reverb, Gate
The plate's send; how hard the snare's gate shuts it.
Delay, Pump
The ping-pong delay (a dotted eighth); how much the kick ducks the rest.

Setup GLO

Root, Tune
The root (the keys too); fine tuning in cents.
MIDI out, Lights
MIDI out over USB; the key lights and the buttons' glow. The audio load shows top right.

Buttons

  • Keys move the root: the machine changes key on the next bar.
  • PLAY runs / stops. EDIT the next section. REC a breakdown; again, the build; again, the drop.
  • OCT− a fill, OCT+ new riffs and lines (mutate). Hold EDIT and press a layer's page button to mute it.
  • SELECT the previous or next page; with HOME held, the tempo. ALGORITHM the mode, PRESETS the piece (each remembers how you left it).
  • SAVE saves; hold it to reset the piece (and give its song back to the machine). Hold any button for a second and a card says what it does (with a mouse: Shift-click to hold it, click again to let go).

Your songs: the editors

  • A page's button again: HOME the song, SEQ the drums, LFO the bass, ENV the guitar, ARP the synth, SEL the metal's rings. Again: back to the page.
  • The white keys are the sixteen steps (in the song editor, the sections); the black keys pick a drum, a note of the mode, or (in the song editor) turn a layer on and off.
  • A white key on an empty step puts the drum or note there; pressed and let go on one that has it, it goes. Held, the knobs are the step's own (accent, slide, open chord, octave...).
  • ENV + a step: an accent. EDIT + a step: cleared. SELECT: the part (A the verse, B the chorus, C the breakdown).
  • Any edit locks the song: the machine changes nothing in it by itself. KNOB 4 in the song editor turns it back to auto.

Mouse and touch

  • Drag a knob up or down, or use the scroll wheel over it.
  • Click or touch buttons and keys. Several fingers at once work on a touch screen.
  • Combinations with a mouse: Shift-click (or right-click) a button to hold it down, click again to let go.

Keyboard

  • White keys 1–8: Q–I, 9–16: A–K. Black keys 1–11: 1–0, -.
  • Space PLAY, Enter REC (breakdown), N EDIT (next), V ENV (the Guitar page), Esc HOME, Z / X OCT− / OCT+ (fill / mutate).
  • ↑ ↓ turn SELECT.

Saving

SAVE keeps your settings in this browser, as the FM-1 keeps them in its memory. Factory reset forgets them. It is the firmware, not a recording: what you hear is IND-1 running, at the FM-1's 44.1 kHz. The idea of running FM-1 firmware in the browser comes from Groove OS's emulator.
