SEQ-4

four MIDI sequencers for the FM-1: in the browser, the same code the FM-1 runs

Turn your phone sideways for bigger controls.

Off. Its click starts when you switch it on.
SEQ-4 plays MIDI: connect a synth (a software one works too) to hear its sequencers.

The grid

The screen shows sixteen steps of the sequencer picked with ALGORITHM (1 to 4), eight rows of notes high. PRESETS picks its pattern (in at the next bar while it plays). Each sequencer has its own MIDI channel and port, and one of six modes (hold GLO, press SEQ, turn knob 4).

White keys the steps

Tap
A step on (on the row picked last), or off.
Hold one, press another
A tie from the first to the second (pressed right to left: the same note, not tied).
Hold a step, turn the knobs
Its velocity, octave, gate and mod value; with GLO held its glide, condition (chance, A:B, fill...), repeats and timing.

Black keys the rows

1–8
The rows: hold one and press steps to draw on it; hold a step and press one for its note. In Multitrack they are its eight tracks.
9, 10
The page back and on (eight pages, 128 steps). With GLO: the sequence rotated.
11 (MUTE)
Mutes the sequencer; held, white keys 1–4 mute the four, 5–12 the tracks.

Knobs 1–4

Nothing held
Every step's velocity, the base octave, every gate, the mod lane.
GLO held
Tempo, swing, scale, root.
In a menu
The menu's four values; SELECT turns its pages, HOME closes it.

The six modes

Mono, Poly, Chord
Notes on a scale's rows; up to seven notes a step; a chord a step (type, voicing, spread, strum), with its own arpeggiator.
Multitrack
Eight tracks of triggers, each its own note, channel, length and division: drums. Euclid and a drum generator (Grids' map).
Stochastic, Matriceal
Chances that choose notes and rhythms; lanes of note, interval, velocity, gate and more, each its own length.

Buttons

  • PLAY plays and stops (held while playing: a fill). REC records; stopped, step by step. Twice: what you just played, captured.
  • SEQ the keyboard (chords on the white keys in Chord mode, drum pads in Multitrack). ENV the mod lanes. HOME back; held: the patterns.
  • SEL division and direction (twice: the loop). FX random; with GLO the generators. LFO the LFOs. ARP the arpeggiator.
  • EDIT undo; held, a step copied then pasted. SAVE saves; held, a key saves into that pattern. GLO held long: the setup.
  • Hold any button for a second and a card says what it does (with a mouse: Shift-click to hold it, click again to let go).

Mouse and touch

  • Drag a knob up or down, or use the scroll wheel over it.
  • Click or touch buttons and keys. Several fingers at once work on a touch screen.
  • Combinations with a mouse: Shift-click (or right-click) a button to hold it down, click again to let go.

Keyboard

  • White keys 1–8: Q–I, 9–16: A–K. Black keys 1–11: 1–0, -.
  • Space PLAY, Enter REC, Esc HOME, G GLO, N EDIT, B SEL, M SEQ, F FX, C ARP, V ENV, L LFO, P SAVE, Z / X OCT− / OCT+.
  • ↑ ↓ turn SELECT.

MIDI and saving

Connect MIDI and pick where each of SEQ-4's four ports (A–D) goes, and an input for notes and clock coming in (as the FM-1's TRS jack). Chrome, Edge and Firefox have Web MIDI; Safari does not. SAVE keeps the patterns in this browser, as the FM-1 keeps them in its memory; Factory reset forgets them. The idea of running FM-1 firmware in the browser comes from Groove OS's emulator.
